FIND A HIDDEN TREASURE AT BAKE'S PLACE

By Chantelle Lusebrink, Issaquah Press

Step into the town hall at Providence Point and discover one of the best kept secrets in town — and perhaps the greater Seattle area.

Attracting some of the best contemporary jazz musicians from throughout the country, jazz enthusiasts flock to what Craig and Laura Baker call their living room

In an era espousing values for musical venues more along the lines of the larger-the-louder-the-better, Bake's Place is an intimate live music experience with top musicians rarely afforded to music goers today.

As you enter the "living room" you have an overwhelming sense of comfort and intimacy. The walls are splashed with color — sensual reds, deep indigos, and rich browns — and are dotted with photographs of the world's finest jazz players. An intimate stage with the best sound system is tucked into the end of the room — a surprise encounter in the middle of this eastside retirement community. It's a venue so appealing that it is considered amoung our regions's best jazz lounges.

Jazz Hang: Bake's Place at Providence Point

By Katy Bourne

... Baker is enthusiastic, altruistic and focused. Bake’s initially began 10 years ago as a private jazz supper club in Baker’s home in Redmond. After difficulties with local zoning ordinances, Baker moved the club to its present residence, Providence Point in Issaquah, where it has been for five years. The room, with its lush interiors and pristine sound, is like a combination of a living room and a meditation hall. This is very much in keeping with Baker’s intention. “This is a place of meditation. The meditation is music.” Craig and Laura have created a space, which is an extension of their own living room, where guests can relax, unwind, forget the stress of busy lives and truly listen to great live music. In Baker’s words, “The intention is you are here for the music.” The programming at Bake’s is excellent, regularly offering a line-up of some of the nation’s top, touring jazz musicians as well as providing a home stage for some of the region’s brightest jazz luminaries. The majority of Bake’s performers are vocalists. This is in keeping with his goal of bringing new fans to jazz music. Baker is looking for new converts, people not previously exposed to jazz. In that vein, Baker believes that vocal jazz, in particular, is an accessible introduction to the “non-jazz public”. Bake’s regular rotation includes top-notch singers such as Greta Matassa, Karin Plato, Rebecca Parris and Gail Pettis. Instrumental acts include Seattle vibraphonist, Ben Thomas, and Brazilian-born pianist, Jovino Santos Neto.

Jazz Club "Bake's Place puts a premium on some of the finer things in life ... The intimate setting allows listeners to be up close to the music, watching the interaction of the musicians, becoming a part of the dramatic events as they unfold. As a musician, my own performances are elevated in such a setting. Craig and Laura Baker and their great staff treat the music with great care and love. Presenting jazz as the art form that it truly is ... Great moments and memories are in store for anyone who visits and everyone leaves a little richer from the experience."

Jazz Club

Bake's is one of the best-kept secrets in the Pacific Northwest. The unique environment Craig and Laura have created transforms each would-be "performance" into a breathtakingly intimate encounter between artist and audience....
